2003-04 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 16-22)
Gwen Strohmeyer of Edgewood College
...Senior...Forward...Winchester, WI (Winneconne High School)
The senior forward had an outstanding week finishing with her best performance against WLC to advance the Eagles (13-14) to the Championship game. Versus WLC she had 20 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and 6-7 from the free-throw line, including 8 rebounds. For the week she averaged 15.7 ppg and 4.0 rpg.


Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 16-22)
Katie Hensgen of Edgewood College
...Junior...Guard...Waunakee, WI (Waunakee High School)
Hensgen's defensive efforts against WLC in the LMC semifinal game were key in Edgewood's victory. She played in only two of Edgewood's three games due to injury, but still averaged 4.0 rpg, 3.0 spg, and 1.0 bpg.

Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 9-15)
Christy Wilson of Marian College
...Freshman...Guard/Forward...Springfield, MO (Ashwaubenon High School)
Wilson averaged a team-best 16.0 points per game for the week, making 52% of her field goals including 50% of three-pointers (6-of-12). She had a game-high 20 points vs. Lakeland, going 4-for-5 from three-point range while adding 3 blocks. For the two games, she had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 steals.

Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 9-15)
Katie Bouchard of Marian College
...Senior...Guard...Menasha, WI (Menasha High School)
Bouchard receives the award for the second straight week, as she had an outstanding effort versus LMC Champion Lakeland College. "Katie hustled for every loose ball and every rebound. She is a great competitor," remarks Lakeland coach April Arvan of Bouchard's performance versus the Muskies where she grabbed 7 rebounds, stole the ball 7 times, and dished out 4 assists.

Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 2-8)
Chelsea Borgrud of Marian College
...Sophomore...Forward...Deerfield, WI (Deerfield High School)
Borgrud led the Sabres (9-13, 4-6 LMC) with a 14.0 ppg and 11.5 rebound average for the week, posting back-to-back double-doubles in the two games. She had 12 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over Concordia, followed with 16 points and 12 rebounds (both game highs) in a tought 2-point loss to Edgewood. For the week Borgrud shot 10-21 from the field (48%) and 8-10 from the free-throw line.

Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Feb. 2-8)
Katie Bouchard of Marian College
...Senior...Guard...Menasha, WI (Menasha High School)
Bouchard was second on the team in both points and rebounds, averaging 12.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg. She recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Concordia. She also added 7 assists, 2 blocks, and 6 steals for the week.

Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 26-Feb. 1)
Renee Steinert of Lakeland College
...Junior...Forward...Howards Grove, WI (Sheboygan Lutheran High School)
Steinert averaged a double-double (17.0 ppg, 12.5 rpg) for the third consecutive week, as she is named LMC Player-of-the-Week for a third consecutive time as well. She shot 68% (13-19) from the floor over 70% (8-11) from the free-throw line, and added 1.5 assists and steals per game in two Muskie wins. Lakeland (15-5, 8-0 LMC) can clinch a share of the LMC crown with a win in any of their four remaining conference games.


Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 26-Feb. 1)
Catherine Chappell of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Freshman...Forward...Lemont, IL (Lemont High School)
Chappell recorded her seventh and league-leading eighth double-doubles of the season in two conferences win last week. She averaged 13.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, and 1.5 bpg. The Raiders are 10-10 overall and 4-4 (4th) in the LMC.

Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 19-25)
Renee Steinert of Lakeland College
...Junior...Forward...Howards Grove, WI (Sheboygan Lutheran High School)
Steinert averaged a double-double (19.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg) as she led the league leading Muskies (6-0 LMC) to two conference victories last week. She shot 59% from the floor on 19-32 shooting, and also averaged 2.0 assists, a block and a steal a game. This is the second time she received the award in as many weeks.

Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Jan 19-25)
Cortney Femling of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Sophomore...Guard...Green Bay, WI (Bay Port High School)
Although the Raiders (8-10, 2-4 LMC) dropped a pair of losses in the LMC last week, Femling played her heart out. For the week she averaged 17.0 ppg, 5.5 apg, 5.0 rpg, and 2.5 spg.

Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 12-18)
Renee Steinert of Lakeland College
...Junior...Forward...Howards Grove, WI (Sheboygan Lutheran High School)
In two conference wins last week versus Wisconsin Lutheran and Marian, Steinert shot over 56% from the floor (13-23), and 84% from the free-throw line (11-13). She led the Muskies (11-5, 4-0 LMC) in scoring both nights with 14 and 23, respectively. At Marian, she added 15 rebounds to go with her 23 points to record her third double-double of the season. Her averages for the week were 18.5 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, and 1.5 bpg.

Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 5-11)
JQ Stewart of Concordia University
...Sophomore...Guard...Milwaukee, WI (St. Francis High School)
Stewart broke Concordia's single game scoring record by scoring 41 points versus Marian College last Saturday. The previous record was set by Livija Medne (38 points) 10 years ago. She also recorded two double-doubles in the Falcons' (4-9, 2-1) three games last week and was 3 steals shy of a triple-double at the University of Dubuque on Wednesday where she scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds. Stewart shot 65% (32-49) from the field, 33% (2-6) from three-point land, and 75% (12-16) from the charity stripe. She averaged 26.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 4.7 spg, 3.3 apg, and 1.3 bpg.


Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Jan. 5-11)
Cortney Femling of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Sophomore...Guard...Green Bay, WI (Bay Port High School)
Femling averaged 7.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 3.5 steals in two victories last week. MSOE (8-7, 2-1) defeated Alverno College and Illinois Tech, 64-45 and 77-56, respectively.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 29-Jan. 4)
Laurel Wipperfurth of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Senior...Forward...Lodi, WI
In a 71-70 victory over Eureka College, Wipperfurth helped the Raiders (6-7, 2-1 LMC) comeback from a 9-point half-time deficit. She scored 26 points on 10-21 shooting, and 6-9 from the free-throw line, and grabbed 17 rebounds including 7 on the offensive end in the game. She also added 2 steals and a block on the defensive end.

Jenna Boehm of Lakeland College
...Freshman...Forward...Green Bay, WI (Green Bay Preble High School)

Both Muskie freshmen earned their first double-doubles of their respective collegiate careers in a 66-62 victory over Mount Mercy College last week. The rookies both had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the consolation championship of the Clarke College Holiday Tournament in Dubuque. The Muskies are 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the LMC.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 22-28)
Erin Hilleshiem of Wisconsin Lutheran College
...Junior...Guard...Waukesha, WI (Wisconsin Lutheran High School) 
In a 63-60 victory over Concordia University of Michigan, Hilleshiem scored 16 points, including an 8-12 performance from the free-throw line.  In the last 1:19 of the game, Erin made 7 of 8 free-throw attempts, including 4 of 4 in the last 5 seconds, which twice tied the game and gave the Warriors (5-5) the lead and eventually the victory.  She also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

Women's Basketball Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 22-28)
Sarah Metzger of Wisconsin Lutheran College 
...Senior...Guard...Wauwatosa, WI (Wisconsin Lutheran High School)
Metzger's hustle paid off in the three-point victory over Concordia (Mich.). She totaled 8 rebounds, 5 assists, a block and a steal in the non-conference win.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 15-21)
Bobbi Jo Merten of Marian College
...Junior...Guard...St. Cloud, WI (New Holstein High School)
Merten averaged a team leading 12.3 points in three games for the Sabres (5-6, 1-1 LMC) last week. She shot over 70% (15-21) from the free-throw line and averaged 4.3 steals and 3.7 assists last week. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the American Bank Tournament in Lake Wales, Florida, where the Sabres lost to Tennessee Wesleyan in the opening game, yet defeated Carlow College in the consolation game.

Women's Basketball Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 15-21)
Cortney Femling of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Sophomore...Guard...Green Bay, WI (Bay Port High School)
Femling had a game high 29 points in a 81-61 win over Marian. She also had 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in leading the Raiders (5-7, 2-1 LMC) to victory. "She was all over the court and seemed like she was making every shot in the first half," comments Marian head coach Doug Neumann.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 8-14)
Crystal Meerdink of Concordia University
...Freshman...Center...Oostburg, WI (Oostburg High School)
Meerdink recorded her first double-double of her collegiate career (19 points and 12 rebounds) in a 76-72 win versus Siena Heights University last week. The freshman also had a 24 point, 8 rebound performance in a 70-52 victory at Carthage College. For the week her averages were 21.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, and 1.5 bpg. The Falcons are 2-6 overall, and 0-1 in the LMC. 

Women's Basketball Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 8-14)
Karli Nichols of Lakeland College
...Junior...Guard...Brookfield, WI (Greendale Martin Luther High School)
The junior guard had 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds without committing any turnovers as the Muskies (5-3, 2-0 LMC) defeated Edgewood 72-36 in a LMC contest last week in Madison.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 1-7)
Catherine Chappell of Milwaukee School of Engineering

It was Chappell's show as she racked up 2 double-doubles last week in three games. In both LMC contests she recorded her double-doubles with 25 points and 12 rebounds in a 69-47 win over Maranatha Baptist, and 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 41-69 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran. Chappell was just 3 rebounds shy of a double-double as she scored 23 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in an 80-52 non-conference win over Illinois Tech. The Raiders are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference.

Women's Basketball Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Dec. 1-7)
Stephanie Young of Concordia University
...Freshman...Guard...Hamburg, MN (Mayer Lutheran High School)
Young came off the Falcon's (1-6, 0-1 LMC) bench to grab 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists while scoring 7 points in a 63-84 loss to Lakeland. Young certainly made an impression, as she was nominated by Lakeland's Head coach April Arvan.

Amanda Mirr of Marian College
...Freshman...Guard...Green Lake, WI (Green Lake High School)
Mirr went 7-14 from the floor in two games last week, including 6-10 from 3-point range. She averaged 12.0 ppg, 3.0 spg, and 1.0 apg in the Sabres losses to Lawrence and Benedictine.

Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week (Nov. 21-23)
Kim Bond of Maranatha Baptist Bible College
...Freshman...Guard...Watertown, WI (Maranatha Baptist Academy)
In only her second collegiate contest of her career, the freshman took over the game. The Crusaders were trailing Crown College 43-23 at the half, but Bond scored 47 points in the second half and the two overtimes to give Maranatha the 95-87 victory. Bond finished the game with 53 points on 16-30 shooing including 6-8 from 3's, and also shot 15-20 from the free-throw line. The previous night Maranatha defeated My. Mary College 90-10, where the starter saw limited playing time (15 minutes), but still scored 9 points and grabbed 3 rebounds and a steal.

Women's Basketball Hustle-Player-of-the-Week (Nov. 21-23)
Amanda Mirr of Marian College
...Freshman...Guard...Green Lake, WI (Green Lake High School)
The rookie helped the Sabres to a 1-1 start this season while being named the All-Tournament Team at the Mt. St. Mary College Tournament in New York. Her averages were 13.0 ppg, 3.0 apg, and 1.5 rpg. Marian lost to host Mt. St. Mary 88-77 opening night, and then defeated Brooklyn 94-30 in the consolation game of the tournament.
