2005 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

May 2-May 8
Jake Panzer of Marian College
...Senior...P...Beechwood, WI (St. Mary's Springs H.S.)
Panzer went 2-0 with an ERA of just 1.12 last week for the Sabres. Panzer threw a six-inning victory, allowing just one run and striking out five against Wisconsin Lutheran on May 3, where the Sabres won 13-1. Panzer finished off the week with some relief work and earning a win in the Sabres 14-inning defeat of Lakeland on May 7, throwing two scoreless innings.

Andy Becker of Concordia University
...Freshman...3B...Wauwatosa, WI (West H.S.)
Becker hit .500 (14-for-28) in five games for the Falcons last week. Becker scored 15 runs, drove in 16, and had three doubles, a triple and three homeruns. CUW went 3-2 in games versus No. 1 UW-Whitewater, where they lost 6-3 and 11-9, and swept Maranatha Baptist three games to none.

April 25-May 1
Eric Stanley of Maranatha Baptist Bible College
...Sophomore...P...Odessa, MO (Tri-City Christian H.S.)
In the first game of a three game series versus Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, Stanley threw the first no-hitter of his collegiate career and the first no-hitter in Maranatha Baptist Bible College baseball history. Stanley struck out 15 and walked six in a 17-1 complete game victory over Pillsbury. The Crusaders went 3-0 last week, sweeping Pillsbury, 17-1, 14-1 and 22-0 for a 53-2 run differential.

April 18-April 24
Kurt Miller of Marian College
...Senior...C...Sheboygan, WI (North H.S.)
Miller hit .438 for the week, going 7-for-16 with nine RBI in four games, and scoring five runs. Miller had three doubles and a homerun for a .813 slugging percentage, and had a .417 on-base percentage. Versus Carroll on April 19, Miller went 3-for-4 in game one with four RBI. Later in the week on April 24, Miller had three hits, including a three-run homerun and four RBI in a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point. The Sabres went 1-3 in the two doubleheaders.

Cody Flynn of Edgewood College
...Sophomore...P...Eureka, CA (St. Bernard H.S.)
Flynn hurled his third consecutive complete game in a 2-0 victory over MSOE on April 23, improving his record to 4-2 on the mound this season. Flynn struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings while holding the Raiders to just three hits. Without much run support, Flynn rallied the Eagles by throwing his first shutout in an Edgewood uniform. The Eagles swept the season series with MSOE.

April 11-April 17
Joe Fields of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Junior...DH...Farnhamville, IA (Farnhamville H.S.)
Fields had a .714 batting average (5-for-7) last week which included a double, two runs, three RBI and zero strikeouts. Fields recorded a .857 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage, and added a sacrifice fly and a walk. He went 2-for-2 in a 14-5 win over Marian in game one of a doubleheader, and then went 3-for-4 in a 4-3 loss in game two.

Bryan Burgert of Marian College
...Junior...P...Oshkosh, WI (West H.S.)
Burgert led the Sabres with a 1.59 ERA for the week, going 1-0 in two starts. Burgert threw a nine-inning complete game shutout versus Wisconsin Lutheran on April 11, striking out eight batters. He just missed another win, throwing 8.0 innings in a no-decision versus MSOE, a game the Sabres won, 4-3, in the ninth. In 17.0 innings of work last week, Burgert struck out 15 batters.

April 4-April 10
Jason Bunton of Marian College
...Senior...P...Townsend, WI (Wabeno H.S.)
Bunton was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA for the week in two appearances on the mound. Bunton threw a complete game 4-0 shutout versus Concordia on April 8, allowing just five hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. Two days later against No. 12 Carthage College, Bunton recorded a save and four strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

Nick Wilz of Edgewood College
...Junior...1B...Appleton, WI (East H.S.)
Wilz led the Eagles to a 5-0 record last week where he hit .625 (10-for-16) with a team-leading 16 RBI, including seven runs scored and a .875 slugging percentage. Wilz drive in four runs in each of the Eagles' three games against Maranatha Baptist en route to a regular season sweep over the LMC opponent. He then picked up three hits, including a triple, walked once, and stole a base in a doubleheader at Lakeland on Saturday, in addition to four more RBI and three runs scored.

March 28-April 3
Eric Stanley of Maranatha Baptist Bible College
...Sophomore...1B...Odessa, MO (Tri-City Christian H.S.)
In a three-game series against preseason favorite Marian College, Stanley hit .625 (5-for-8) and had a 1.250 slugging percentage, including two doubles and a homerun. Stanley recorded a .700 on-base percentage, walking twice with no strikeouts. Defensively, Stanley had 19 PO, and three assists. The Crusaders dropped all three games, 10-9, 6-4 and 11-3.

March 21-27
Matt Melville of Marian College
...Sophomore...3B...Wisconsin Rapids, WI (Wis. Rapids Lincoln H.S.)
Melville led the Sabres in hits for the week, finishing with a team-high .409 batting average and a .500 on-base percentage. Melville started the season with five-game hitting streak, and has had hits in seven of the Sabres' eight games. Melville went 2-for-3 in a game versus Concordia-Moorhead on March 24, and then again versus St. John's (Minn.) the following day.

Richard Febus of Maranatha Baptist Bible College
...Sophomore...P...Chesapeake, VA (Bethel Christian H.S.)
Febus pitched a complete game victory in a 7-6 win over Free Will Baptist College on March 24. In the win Febus had nine strikeouts and allowed nine hits. The Crusaders fell in the second game of the doubleheader, 16-10.

March 14-20
Anthony Gorzelnik of Milwaukee School of Engineering
...Sophomore...3B/SS...Antioch, IL (Antioch Community H.S.)
Gorzelnik led the Raiders in just about every major statistical category this past weekend in St. Louis. Gorzelnik batted .417 (5-for-12) which included three doubles and five RBI. Gorzelnik had a slugging percentage of .667, an on-base percentage of .563, was walked four times and had three stolen bases. He also contributed on defense with 12 assists and four putouts. Gorzelnik recorded at least one hit in each of the four games this past weekend, where MSOE dropped four games.

Andrew Handorf of Edgewood College
...Junior...OF...DeForest, WI (DeForest H.S.)
Handorf went a combined 8-for-14 (.571) at the plate in three games for the Eagles last week. In Edgewood's 6-4 victory at Hanover College on March 17, Handorf was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. He then collected two hits in a 4-0 loss at Emory University two nights later on March 19. On March 20 versus North Central College (IL), he had two hits and two RBI in the 16-12 win.

March 7-13
Shawn Burcum of Edgewood College
...Junior...C...DeForest, WI (DeForest H.S.)
Burcum helped the Eagles open their season with a 3-1 record this past weekend. Burcum batted .444 (4-for-9) with a slugging percentage of .667. In the first game of a doubleheader against Augsburg, Burcum hit 3-for-4  with a pair of doubles, including two RBI and three runs scored as the Eagles prevailed 8-4. Burcum then had an RBI single in his only at-bat in the nightcap of Edgewood's 5-2 victory. The Eagles split with Northwestern (Iowa) earlier in the weekend, winning 8-2 and falling 3-2 in the second game.
